Reader’s Question:

I just bought a 99 Mazda Miata in Wheeling, West Virginia. It was supposed to be good retail value about $12,600. I just found out that it will have a salvage title because of previous history. The vehicle looks great and mechanically seems good. What would you estimate that the Retail Value of the vehicle would be now knowing these facts?

In many states such as West Virginia, vehicles with salvage titles are prohibited from being registered but some states permit the title to be changed to rebuilt after an inspection proving it to be street worthy. I suggest that you check to make sure you can register the car or you may have to go back to who sold the vehicle to you.

The retail value of the Mazda Miata will vary depending on the transmission type, mileage, trim and your location. After that is determined the value will then be brought down more because of the salvage title.

Verify with your insurance company to make sure they will insure the Miata with the salvaged title.
